時は１８６０年代。アメリカ東北部のコンコードという町に、仲のよい四人の姉妹がいました。
美しくて、社交界に憧れる長女のメグ。男まさりで、読書好きの次女、ジョー。内気でピアノが上手な、三女のベス。そして絵が得意でおしゃまな末っ子、エイミー。
In 1860s in the northeastern town of Concord in New England, the United States, there lived four very close sisters of The Marches family named Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. Pretty Meg, the oldest daughter, always dreamed of upper-class life and going to parties. The boyish second girl, Jo, loved to read books. The third daughter Beth, the shy one, was a good pianist. And the little lady, Amy, was a good painter.
姉妹は、母・メアリーといっしょに、南北戦争に行ったお父さんの帰りを待ちわびながら、つつましやかに暮らしていました。そんなマーチ家にも、クリスマスがやってきました。「プレゼントのないクリスマスなんて、クリスマスじゃないわ！」「貧乏って最低！」文句を言うジョーやメグに対して「お父様やお母様、そして姉妹がいるだけで私は満足よ」と言うベス。
The sisters and their mother, Mary, led humble life, waiting for Father March to return from fighting in the Civil War. When Christmas season arrived, Jo and Meg grumbled, “Christmas won’t be Christmas without presents!” “It’s so dreadful to be poor!” But Beth said contentedly, “We’ve got Father and Mother, and each other.”
マーチ家の隣には、年老いたお金持ちのローレンスさんが住んでいました。それまで、気むずかしいローレンスさんとマーチ家は、これといった交流はありませんでした。でも、同じ年代の孫・ローリイの部屋の窓に、ジョーが雪だまをブツけたことがきっかけで、両家はおつきあいをはじめます。
Next to their house lived the rich and elderly Mr. Lawrence and his grandson named Laurie. Known for being difficult, Mr. Lawrence didn’t socialize with The Marches. But they got to know each other after Jo, who wanted to make friends with Laurence, tossed up a snowball to the window of his room to make him look out.
最初は、うちとけられなかったベスも、気むずかしいローレンスさんと、だんだん仲良しになっていました。
お屋敷にあるグランドピアノを自由に弾かせてもらえるようになると、ベスはうれしくてたまりません。
「感謝の印に」と、ローレンスさんに温かい部屋ばきを作ってあげたのです。
そうしたら、今度はなんとローレンスさんから、マーチ家にアップライトピアノが運ばれてきたのでした。
At first, timid Beth found it hard to talk to old Mr. Lawrence, but gradually became comfortable around him. He offered the girls to practice on the grand piano any time of the day in his mansion, which made Beth, the good pianist, very happy. She was so thankful that she made a pair of slippers for Mr. Lawrence, who in return sent The Marches a little cabinet piano.
「このピアノはね、ずっと弾いてくれる人を探していたんだ。私たちの代わりに、あなたがたが音を出してあげてくれないかい？」夢のような楽器を前に、ベスは手をたたいて喜びたいのを必死で抑えていました。
His letter said, “This piano has been looking for someone to practice on. Would you be so kind to play it on our behalf?” Seeing the beautiful little piano, Beth couldn’t be happier. She had hard time hiding her joy, pressing her hands together to keep from clapping.
ある日、戦争に行っていた父が怪我をして、ワシントンで入院しているという知らせが届きます。
ジョーは、お母さんの旅費をつくるために、大切にしていた自分の金髪を２５ドルで売って渡しました。
ところが、お母さんが、お父さんの看護に行って留守の間に、マーチ家には大変なことが起こります。
One day, The March family received a telegram that Mr. March was seriously ill and stayed in the hospital in Washington, D.C. Jo had her precious blond hair cut off and sold so that she could provide her mother with $25 for her trip to the hospital. In their mother’s absence, something terrible happened to The Marches.
貧しい近所の娘を看護してあげたことがきっかけで、今度はべスが、しょうこう熱にかかってしまうのです。
死の影と戦うベスを看病しながら、ジョーは思います。「ベスという妹は、なんとやさしい心を持った妹なのでしょう。人のために生きる、なんと深い人間なのか」
姉妹たちの必死の看病で、ベスは何とか一命をとりとめたのでした。
Beth went to visit a poor neighbor to bring them food and supplies and while taking care of their ill baby, she contracted scarlet fever. Jo devoted herself to Beth and saw how the sweet younger sister bore pain uncomplainingly and unselfishly lived for others. With her sisters’ devoted care, Beth survived the sickness but did not retain her energy as she used to.
再びクリスマスの時期が巡ってきました。昨年は「プレゼントのないクリスマスなんて、クリスマスじゃないわ」と言っていたジョーも、「お父様がいらしたら、私はもう、何もいらないわ」というベスの言葉に「本当にそう思うわ」とうなずきます。様々な事件を経て、少女だった姉妹は、若き女性へと成長しはじめます。
そして、そんな姉妹のもとに、戦争に行っていたお父さんも、いよいよ帰ってくるのでした。
Christmas season arrived. “I’m so full of happiness, that if Father was only here, I couldn’t hold one drop more,” said Beth. “So am I,” added Jo, who, only the year before, grumbled, “Christmas won’t be Christmas without presents!” Through their dreams and hardships, the four little girls surely began to grow in maturity as fine ladies. And to these women on Christmas Day, Mr. March returned.
